fall/winter ready-to-wear 2011, part iii

MICHAEL KORS

Indisputably one of my favorite designers of all time. He gets the woman. He gets the American woman. He gets the market, the consumer. I spy Celine, Mad Men, Grease. Simple, clean lines or swooping drapes. Sexy done right, every time. Twenties dresses for the flapper of the 21st century who drinks dirty martini’s during lunch hour and leather shifts for the Pink Ladies gone corporate. Also adoring the impeccable styling and play with color schemes (his palettes are always incredible) – monochromatic ensemblescan be so lengthening.

Ralph Lauren

Okay, okay – I know what you’re thinking. Nineteen year old girls should not be hankering over things like Ralph Lauren and knee-length pencil skirts and clothing fit for a corporate environment. But I am! Judge me. Red lips! Fitted pencil skirts that hit right below the knee cap! Blouses tucked in to everything! Twenties meets le smoking with a definite Eastern inspiration. I sometimes have the taste of a woman in her mid-thirties, so I promise you I won’t be offended if you tell me so. I’m well aware, thanksyouverymuch.

Victoria Beckham

I don’t care what anyone says. I’ve always loved Victoria Beckham’s collections; perhaps that makes me a fashion veectim, but I will give credit when it is due. She (or whoever is designing) understands the woman and her needs. Perfectly suitable and appropriate for corporate environments without having to forgo femininity or style and transitions well into an evening out. Or maybe this is the 19-going-on-30 year old talking. I have my own cubicle. I can’t help with knee-length things are always on my mind

Z Spoke by Zac Posen

Dear Zac — Your models scare me; the Addams family look isn’t exactly a look I find appealing. However, there’s something about your clothes that make it impossible for me not to give the campaign a second look, which is, I suppose, all that matters in the end. And no, it’s not just because I’m a fiend for black (and neutrals). Fall through your eyes is dark, romantic, feminine with unadulterated sex appeal. A pass on the black lips and cadaverous powdered skin, but the clothes? Send them my way, s’il vous plaît.

  1. I like all the draping dresses and skirts in the Michael Kors collection. That skirt with the high slit is so fabulous. I’ve also always loved Victoria Beckham’s collections her clothes are made to completely fit a woman’s body, they’re gorgeous.

  2. Haven’t ever really taken notice of Michael Kors’ collection, but I think I should start. He does sexy, yet classy and also powerful, oh my…. That white top with the black slit skirt is yummy :)

  3. I haven’t had a chance to look through the fall collections yet. But I’m definitely making note to check out Ralph Lauren as I love his fall ad campaigns for the season. I’m already a fan of oriental, art deco, tuxedos….so he’s speaking my language for sure.
I remember Angelina Jolie wearing the Michael Kors black high slit pencil skirt to a recent-ish movie premiere, she looked amazing in it. Also I feel like I must constantly call it to everyone’s attention but Michael Kors was the first creative director of Celine, he was there from 1997-2004, and Celine has not received this level of attention since its Michael Kors era. Even though he was celebrated designer there, he ultimately left to concentrate on his own collections and at LVMH’s relative neglect of the brand in favor of the juggernauts in its’ portfolio like Dior and Vuitton.

    • @Prêt à Porter P: Thank god I’m not the only one who’s waited this long to view the collections – I honestly can’t be bothered, haha!

And yes yes yes, I know of which one you’re talking about! Everything Jolie wears of that nature looks stunning on her; black, high slits exudes AJ, I think. I need to google that picture, stat.

I didn’t know that; now that you mention it, I do wish more people knew that fact (myself included). It really puts Kors in a different perspective for me; the Celine references aren’t so abstract or unoriginal then! Seriously amazing. I must read up on that, thank you so much! I always learn new bits and pieces from you (: x
